The Luxe Edit - Facial Oils 101

Alright, so last week, we embraced the bathrobe life and accepted that our hormones have their own chaotic agenda. (Rude, honestly.) But today, we’re diving into something we can control—our skincare routine. More specifically, facial oils.

Now, before you start side-eyeing me and saying, “Oils? On my face? But won’t that make me look like a glazed doughnut?”—hear me out. I thought the exact same thing I hesitated for so long after someone suggested I try oils. I thought -insert cloud bubble: “are they nuts? With these pores and this oily yet completely dehydrated skin? no thanks!”  The truth is, the right oils can transform your skin from “meh” to “damn”! But only if you’re using them correctly. And let’s be real—most people aren’t.

So, let’s break down the most common mistakes people make with facial oils and make sure you’re not out here sabotaging your own glow.

Mistake #1: Thinking All Oils Are the Same

No, Karen, that coconut oil from your kitchen is not a one-size-fits-all solution for your face. Some oils are lightweight and fast-absorbing (like jojoba and grapeseed), while others are richer and better for dry skin (like rosehip and argan). If an oil feels too heavy or clogs your pores, it may not be the right match for your skin type. Choosing the right ones makes all the difference. Also the blends of oils used need to work synergistically and be balanced so you reap the rewards from the benefits they each offer.

Mistake #2: Applying It at the Wrong Time

Facial oils are like the closing act —they go last. If you’re slapping on an oil before your serums , congratulations, you’ve created an impenetrable barrier. Serums won’t absorb, and you’ve basically just locked all that hydration out instead of in. Oils should be the final step (or second-to-last if you use sunscreen—because yes, you still need sunscreen). My regimen? cleanse, tone, peptide serum and my oils. Some may even add a lightweight, water based moisturizing cream after toning. Lock that moisture in with a few drops of oil you won’t regret it.

Mistake #3: Using Too Much

Listen, I get it. More product = more glow, right? Wrong.  A few drops are all you need. Too much oil can sit on the skin rather than absorbing properly, leading to an unnecessary greasy feel. A little goes a long way when it comes to facial oils. Trust me the glow will come from within. ( gosh that was cheesy)

Mistake #4: Not Giving It a Fair Chance

Your skin needs time to adjust! If you try an oil for two days and give up because you don’t wake up shinning like a diamond, you’re robbing yourself of the glow-up potential. Give it at least two weeks before you pass judgment. (Patience, grasshopper.) Consistency is key, and it can take a couple of weeks for your skin to fully benefit from the added hydration and nourishment. Additionally, if you’re switching from conventional skincare filled with synthetic ingredients to a cleaner, more natural routine, your skin may go through a purging phase. This is completely normal—your skin is detoxing from buildup and adjusting to a formula that actually nourishes rather than masking issues. Stick with it, and you’ll see the benefits over time. In my case the results were almost instant, 2 weeks and I was hooked.

Mistake #5: Ignoring the Quality

Would you put expired cooking oil on your face? No? Then don’t skimp on skincare oils either. Look for cold-pressed, unrefined, organic oils—whether it’s a luxurious facial oil like Haute Couture, an ultra-hydrating blend like Negligee, a powerhouse like Halo Hair & Scalp Oil or even a nourishing body oil like Kaviar. High-quality ingredients matter, and your skin (and hair) will thank you for choosing wisely.

(Shameless plug, but hey, it’s that good here's the link check'em out .)

So, there you have it—five mistakes you might be making with facial oils, officially debunked. Next week I’ll dive into some of my own skin issues and how this line was born.

But for now? Take a second to admire your beautifully hydrated, glow-worthy face. And maybe—just maybe—grab that bathrobe and give yourself the self-care moment you deserve.

That's today's dose of luxe wisdom - go forth, glow, and don't forget to hydrate (inside  and out).
